The 1st Class Crane Operator will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of various cranes to move materials, equipment, and structural components throughout the shipyard.
Essential Functions:
- Operate cranes (e.g., overhead, gantry, mobile, or tower cranes) to lift, move, and position heavy materials and equipment.
- Perform lifts in support of ship construction, repair, and maintenance operations.
- Read and interpret lift plans, load charts, and work instructions.
- Conduct pre-operational inspections and ensure equipment is in safe working condition.
- Communicate effectively with riggers, signalmen, and supervisors to ensure safe lifts.
- Follow all OSHA, company, and site-specific safety procedures.
- Maintain awareness of surroundings to avoid hazards and ensure safe operations.
- Assist with general yard support as needed.
Requirements:
- Minimum 3 years of experience as a 1st Class Crane Operator in a shipyard environment (required).
- Proven experience operating cranes in marine/shipbuilding settings.
- Ability to read and understand load charts and lift plans.
- Strong understanding of rigging practices and hand signals.
- Must be able to pass an in-person written test.
- Ability to work night shift and overtime as needed.
- Must be able to work in outdoor environments and around heavy equipment.
